animals

The wheat south of the house got cut last night and we didn't even know it. Dane said he could have made a lot more noise. I said maybe it's easy to steal standing wheat. Lucy was the onlydog that went out with me and she went with me out to see Mike. When Paula got up they went out. She said when Claire saw the cut wheat she sat and looked at it and had to look several times to see what changed. Rana came out to see them cut wheat. They wanted to walk out to see the horses who were way out there. I got a couple halters. When I got out there Paula said Midge looked them over and started running circles. She had her head and tail held high. When she decided she knew them she stopped and let them pet her. Buzzie followed me almost all the way out. I carried him the last part because he was getting very hot. I sat him down by some water and he waded right in. When Lucy and I went out to see Mike, Glen wanted to pet her. She shied away like she always does. He didn't chase her or anything and she walked back up to him. He laughed at her and told her she wanted petted. She does just as much as the other 2 but she's not as big a ham.

leilani

Yesterday Leilani cut her foot. It looked like she got it stuck in some wire. When I saw it in the morning it was fresh, probably less than an hour old. We've got some stuff to spray on that keeps the flies off so I sprayed that on. Paula saw it that night and she thinks it is ok. It's not cut very deep. More like a scrape. It's a little swollen but that's probably from pulling out of the wire. I had the gate down when I found her. Stripe saw that and she and Cass walked out. Cass started to take off but slammed on the brakes in front of the horsebarn and waited for me to let her in. I did and gave her a few treats for being a good girl. I had to chase Stripe in. Today Claire and I sprayed thistles at Lucas. It was a lot cooler and the cows were just relaxing and enjoying the cool. They don't like heat anymore than us. I saw a coyote watching us. It was on the top of the hill and watched us for a long time. Eventually Claire saw it and chased it. I yelled at her to come back. I didn't think it was a good idea for her to catch it. It watched us for quite awhile after that.

morrrning

Some mornings are a little cooler than others. One cool morning Buzz came out running so hard he tripped and went sliding on his chest. He got grass stains on him. Then he was just sitting and Juan came up to him. Juan laid beside him and took one of Buzz's back legs and started chewing on it. Of course Buzz saw this as a signal to play. So Buzz took off running circles. He ran over my foot and over the top of Claire. Eventually Juan had to go into some weeds to get away. We told Juan he might have asked for trouble but Juan didn't care. When it's really hot Buzz and Lucy just go out a little and then they start looking at me to see if they can go inside.

weather

It's been really hot and we haven't ridden much. So I decided we'd go out this evening no matter what. It cools off a little about 8 so that was my plan. About 7 Paula wanted to go feed the horses because a cloud was coming.I said wait we're riding. Wow you should have heard her gripe. I said fine I'll go by myself. She finally got on Cass and we took off. I told her the clouds were miles away. We actually had a good ride. As soon as we got off the wind switched to the north and started blowing like crazy. So maybe the storm wasn't miles away. We got the horses put away and went in. Shortly after it started raining. It's about 20 degrees cooler and I think everything worked out nicely. When we came in Claire headed straight to the basement and hasn't come up yet. We're in a tornado watch so maybe se knows something.

turkey

Claire and I went up to Lucas this morning to spray thistles. We were north of Bunker Hill and I saw 3 turkeys on the road. Claire was laying with her head on the door and didn't move. Turkeys don't mean anything to her. They weren't moving much so I started slowing down. 2 of them strolled into the ditch but the other was trying to fly. I was seriously braking now. It got in the air and flew straight down the road. It got close to the windshield and I saw Claire's perk up. So would mine if I could. At the last second the turkey veered off and Claire's ears went down.We were going about the same speed so I don't know if there would have been any damage but I didn't want to find out.

buzz

Paula went to Wichita Tuesday and won't be back until Friday. Claire and Lucy don't care. They're daddy's girls and with one less in the house they just see it as more for them. Buzzie is a mommas boy and he's upset. I've been in the field the last couple of days which has made it worse.. Of course he goes crazy when I come in but then he sits on the back of the chair to see if Paula is coming. He likes to feed horses but last night he only went halfway. Then he laid down and watched the driveway. He fell asleep by the couch. I had to wake him up and then carry him to bed. Tonight he's a little better. He and Lucy were carrying around a rabbit. He might be so full he can't stay awake.
