bull

I went out to pull posts in the cow pens. I saw a calf eating mineral and then I saw the bull run over and chase the calf out of the mineral. I thought that was a little strange but went on. Then I noticed the bull was going all over. Wherever there was a calf away from the herd he chased it back. He didn't care how far either, 10 feet away and he was after it. I was pretty alert as to where he was. He wasn't looking to be mean or anything like that but he wasn't watching anything but the calf. I thought it was better to be safe than sorry. I've never before seen a bull herding anything.

Cassy

Cass has been getting some stuff for her knees. She eats it right down. We got some more but it was a little different. Cass very carefully ate around it and left all the stuff in the dish. I held the dish up to her and she turned her head away refusing to look. She just stared into the distance. Paula got some molasses and put it on. Cass immediately went after it. Paula had dripped a little on my hand. First Cass licked off my hand and then ate the rest of the stuff. She knew as soon as Paula poured on the molasses that she wanted some. Good eye.

headstall

Leilani broke her headstall so we had to get her a new one. We got it yesterday and it looks nice. That just means I'll be more upset when she beaks this one. I wanted to get it close in size to the other one so we laid them out together. While I was working on it Paula got Hero out to brush him. He's really shedding. She had a big pile of hair on the ground that looked like a dead possum. The headstall fit on Leilani's head so we brushed her too. Buzzie started chasing Claire. He does that by tearing around in circles. This time they were close to Leilani so part of his circle was under and around her feet. Leilani lifted up her feet but I don't think she was kicking at him.It was more like she was lifting up to avoid him running into her. It's not like she could have hardly felt him. That shows that horses are very aware of where their feet are. Way more than we think.

chiropractor

Took Leilani to the chiropractor last week. She seemed to enjoy it. I pointed out the hole in the side of her neck. I told Dr. Matt someone told me horses with that hole were all good horses. I also told him that other people told me it didn't mean anything it was just an injury. Dr. Matt said not neccesarily. He said there are some horses born with the hole. They think it comes from something poking the baby while it's inside mama. That would be something like a hoof. So I'm taking that to mean Leilani is special. She has a real neck injury that she's had as long as we've had her. It's up by her ears. She can't flex her head all the way back but it doesn't seem to bother her.

spring

Today was nice when I went out. I could tell it was getting colder because the mud started getting harder. Then it started snowing. Just a little bit at first then great big flakes then lots of little flakes coming down hard. This should mean spring is close. We're about 4 weeks from groundhog day so that means only 2 more weeks of winter. Then I think definitely after today March came in like a lion so that means it will go out like a lamb. So you put those together and it means spring has to be here soon.
