treats

Tami came out to ride Sunday and brought Leilani treats. She said she didn't bring a card because she knew that horse couldn't read but she could eat. Leilani was fine with that because she had just finished all her other treats. Actually she and the other horses. I make her share and that really annoys her. She thinks horses aren't supposed to share. Especially with little sisters. Siete likes the treats but she is still learning how to eat them. She takes one and rolls it around her mouth and eventually gets it down. Leilani will take an entire mouthful and try to eat them without choking herself. Even if Leilani would rather read than eat I like the cards. Maybe it's because I don't like the treats.

hay

Cleaned some hay out where I've been getting it for Leilani. I had to go into the horse pen to dump it and Stripe is making it hard to get in and out. When I was leaving she shot out. I got the ATV to chase her back and she jumped in with the cows. I didn't mind except she broke the fence. I just left her there. Later I took some stuff into the cow pens and she got out again. I just left her out. When Buzzie saw her he took off. I went to find him and he hadn't got very far. He's gotten into a small piece of chicken wire and it was stuck in him. Eventually I had to get pliers to cut it off. Stripe was still bothering him so we went and got Lucy. I've noticed that cattle dogs are usually shy and scared. That's until you flip their charge switch on and they'll go anywhere. That's exactly Lucy. Cows and goats flip her on, so do donkeys. She saw Stripe and took off like a bullet. Donkeys are a little difficult but Lucy understands that. When Stripe turned to go after her she would find cover and then start over. It kept Stripe away until I fed and then she walked in.

new job

I think we've found a new job for Leilani. After we caught the cows we took 4 calves off and left them in the barn so they could be sold. They had to be put with Leilani and Siete because that was the only place. Leilani didn't like them in her pen very well. Actually she hated it. Whenever they got close she planted her feet on them. They were only together a little over a day but the calves learned to keep their distance. Ray came over this morning to help load. As we chased them in the barn Leilani walked beside us. She had her ears laid flat and was biting calves all the way. So now we're thinking maybe while Leilani gets better we could use her as a dog to chase cows.

cookies

Leilani got her first cookies today. Ray brought over some molasses and oatmeal cookies. Leilani loved them. She would have eaten them all but I didn't want her to get a tummy ache. All the horses but Cassy liked the cookies. Cass just let them drool out of her mouth. The dogs were ok with that and they ate them off the ground. For the most part if the horses drop something on the ground they won't eat it.

foot

Leilani's foot still bothers her so we took her to Wichita today. Kind of was a mixed day. Took x-rays to see what was inside. The tendon that was supposed to be cut may have been injured but the big problem was a broken bone. The x-ray showed lots of bone like growth that shouldn't have been there. It also explained why she was still sore. That means that ever since I started riding her she's been hurting. I find it incredible that she did everything that I asked and actually wanted to be chosen when I got a horse. Dr. Brooks said that's what makes a horse so amazing is that want to please so bad. It doesn't make me feel much better since I was the one riding her. I've got a series of shots that he said could make her a lot better. I hope so.

cut

Leilani cut herself again. This is on her non sore foot. She actually appeared to be walking on her sore foot better but it might be because now both feet hurt and it's evened her out. This cut looks like the one Rory had so hopefully it won't be too bad. It looked terrible driving in but after it was washed off it wasn't so bad. She bled a lot in the trailer so when we got home we washed it out. Buzzie went under the trailer for awhile and came out with his face all bloody. He seemed pretty happy about it but he ended up getting a bath.
