tough day

It wasn't a real big sale but it was a tough one. I rode Elena for a little while but she was having trouble breathing so I got on Leilani. Leilani was having a bad day. If I was at home I would have gotten off. We went on and it wore both of us out. We took some cows to Tami and the last one in threw the gate into her knee which made her howl for awhile. When we got home we discovered Diego was beating on Cassy. It took a little effort to get them separated. Cass had a big gash in her shoulder. Leilani was still running around like an idiot so we put her and Diego in the barn. We didn't have anything to sew Cassy up with so Paula went to Claflin to get superglue and we glued her back together. Today Cass looks stiff and sore but she's getting along fine with Elena and the donk. I plan to try getting them all back together gradually.

hot

It was super hot at the sale Monday. Tami brought a 2 and 1/2 gallon jug and 5 of us drank it 3 times. There was some ice which would be a little less liquid and it wasn't quite empty at the end but it's still a lot. They give us tea to put in it. I didn't feel too bad but a little wind would have been nice. Leilani was really sweating but she was wearing a wool blanket. This morning Tami's little blue girl was leaning on the electric wire keeping her apart from our horses. Tonight she was in. I saw this morning the fence was off but was in a hurry to get in the field. I knew she wouldn't leave, just mix things up. I'm sure it's her time of the month. She's very easy to catch.

Rory

We took Rory out to Dighton today. To get him ready he got shoes in the morning. We did him, Elena and Leilani. Rory didn't do bad but being young he kept forgetting why he had one foot up. That wore the farrier out trying to keep one foot up and it wore me out trying to keep him still. The farrier said if he didn't want his feet done we would never have got them done.Rory is very strong. He also loads nicely. He stares at the step and then hurls one foot way in the air like it's a gigantic step. Then he does the next foot. I've learned that if you just wait for him to go through his routine he'll pop right in.

first

Had the first sale after harvest. I hadn't ridden Elena for over a month as we dealt with heaves. When I got her out of the barn her head was high and she was very nervous. I figured she's get over it. Got to the sale and she was still nervous. I still thought she'd get over it. When I got on her she wasn't too bad. The first cow went by and she didn't really want to go. I touched her with the spurs and she exploded. I told her we needed something in between. She never really settled down and I have no idea what was going in. She did her normal good job but really made me work. Tonight I was going to take a bath and heard a squeaking. The Mexican cats had a mouse in the arena(bathtub). I'll just wait until they're done.

bob

Went to see grandma today. It's her birthday. She was clingy wanting to hold hands with anybody who was close. They were feeding some guy named Bob next to her. I don't think Bob understood anything that was said but he was very cheery. All you had to do was look at him and he would smile and giggle. So grandma wants anyone to hold her hand and Bob puts his hands on her chair and grandma grabs on. I said way to go Bob. Bob's smile gets about a mile wide and he is giggling all over the place. I said the next thing we'll see is little Bob's. Paula said it's time to go.

better

Elena has made huge strides in her breathing. She sounds really normal. We got flu shots for the horses which needs to be put up their nose. Horses don't like things put up their noses. Although Thouveneau called Elena calm she is actually our least calm horse. It was a struggle to get it in her and of course now my wrist hurts again. The good thing is that after all the bouncing her breathing remained normal. When we fed her this evening I didn't see the donk. I looked all over. The donk had let itself back in the pen with the other horses. I don't think
Elena minds, she didn't really like her. The donk just stood with the other horses with the attitude of why are you looking at me?

elena

Elena has had a cough for quite awhile and lately has been breathing heavy. We've been going to Dr. Dave to get stuff but it wasn't working very well. Tami has been talking about what to do next and today she called. She said as long as this had been going on it was time to get her to a horse doctor so we could take the guesswork out of treatment. I called Dr. Thouveneau in Russell and he said bring her up. I think he knew immediately but he did a few tests and said she had Heaves. I found out it is sort of treatable. I moved her over to the barn. For a companion I gave her the donk. The donk is underwhelmed. I gave them water in one of our little pans. If anyone out there has a bigger water trough let me know because they are going to tip this over. The donk has already tried to carry it off.
