Today Ray came over so we could work calves. It went surprisingly well considering I wasn't ready or anything. I think part of the reason it went as good as it did was because Juan came out and helped. I saw him walking around on the sides of the chute. Ray said he once stood in the middle of the headgate glaring at the calf. I saw him standing on the bottom of the chute just before a calf came through. We should have taken him to the vet's, there was a hydraulic chute there he would have loved. He must have worn himself out. He is now sleeping ob the top of the grandfather clock. After we got back from the vets we sorted them into what we thought were meal sized portions. Tami wanted some and Ray wanted some. If anyone else wants any just let me know.

weekend

We went to Equifest at Wichita this weekend. When we drove home Saturday night we had to come home in a blizzard and when we got home the lights were out. I guess we should have stayed for Sunday. I don't know if the dogs could have taken another night alone. They were all over us at night and woke up early wanting to play. Grandma pretended she was asleep but the rest of us knew she was awake.

It's drying out. Plus it was really warm today. So Cass celebrated by rolling in the mud and getting herself totally covered . I also rode Leilani for the second day in a row. It's been a long time since that5 happened. I saw where it's been 10 years since we've had a winter this cold.

Yesterday the hospital called and wanted to talk to Paula. It was Leilani the person who called. This is great humor for me. I immediately started telling her about Leilani the horse. When I got done she said" You didn't get hurt did you?" Obviously not a horse person. Juan has been sleeping on top of the grandfather clock. There's a ledge about 2 inches high around the top. He lays his head on the ledge and lets the vent blow warm air in his face.

Went to the horse dentist today. I took Cassie, Rory and Elena. Elena had lots of stuff done last time and I didn't know if it was enough. It was. He looked at her and thought that she didn't need anything today.I think Rory is going to load like Tami's horses. He stares and stares and takes a step. Every step is the same. Slow. He pops right in but it takes forever. After the dentist got done the horses were all in a good mood. They wanted to go to the bank and see Rana. I think they heard that dogs get treats. So we went to the bank. They didn't get treats but they all had a good time.

We had all kinds of weather at the sale. It started out misty. After everyone got soaked it quit for awhile. Then it started snowing. At one point there were giant flakes and you could hardly see. Then the snow quit for awhile before starting again. Cassy did great she was very smooth. Leilani was a different story. She didn't want to leave the shelter. Then she didn't want to do gates. I had to get off a bunch of times and she didn't want to stand. I ended up lungeing her in the alley in 6 inches of snow and slop. It worked but I was totally exhausted and even more soaked. That night Paula was laying on the couch. She laughed about having both black Joses laying with her. I said who's that? One of the cats with her was a cat we'd never seen .It was quite comfortable and is still here.

Paul's ear got all swollen up. I took him to the doctor today who said you just can't drain it, it has to be fixed with surgery. Paul's not exactly thrilled. Kathy at the vet has a sling on her shoulder. She said they've done 7 x-rays. She too is not thrilled. Paul feels pretty good. Kathy is in a lot of pain.

Claire got her shots today. She had a good time as usual. She got probably 10 doggy treats. Dave very carefully listened to her breathe. He said she sounded normal and thought she would be alright. I took Lucy along. Kim hasn't been working there too long and wanted to see her. So Lucy also had a good time. I was going to take Nicky and had her in the kitty carrier. Nicky started banging on the carrier and knocked it on the floor, which caused the door to come open far enough for her to get out. So she didn't go. Elena had been easy to catch but on Monday we could hardly catch her. So today I started with her again. Naturally she caught easily but I worked with her for awhile so she would know she was caught.

Finally had a nice sale day. This is the first time in a long time it hasn't been freezing cold or snowy or muddy. Leilani had a good day. I was very concerned. Last week was so bad I was anxious to get back. I wanted to make sure she wasn't that bad. Tami was having pickup problems so she rode Elena. Tami never settles for a halfway effort. That's kind of how Elena is. So for awhile they really went at it. I can say for certain Elena will never buck. Tami doesn't think she knows how. I do know if she knew how she would have been bucking today. When Tami got done they were both soaked with sweat. Elena did great the rest of the sale. She'll be sore tomorrow.
